On binscatter

Binscatter is a popular method for visualizing bivariate relationships and conducting informal specification testing. We study the properties of this method formally and develop enhanced visualization and econometric binscatter tools. These include estimating conditional means with optimal binning and quantifying uncertainty. We also highlight a methodological problem related to covariate adjustment that can yield incorrect conclusions. (Visualizing) Plausible Treatment Effect Paths

We consider estimation and inference for treatment effect paths. Examples include dynamic treatment effects, impulse response functions, and event study paths. We present two sets of plausible bounds to help visualize uncertainty associated with these paths. Both plausible bounds are often tighter than traditional confidence intervals, and can provide insights even when traditional (uniform) confidence bands appear uninformative. This paper studies the limiting behavior of the test for instrument exogeneity in linear models when there is uncertainty about the strength of the identification signal. We consider the test for conditional moment restrictions with an expanding set of constructed instruments.
