Remarks to the Boston Economic Club: The Economy’s Performance and Outlook, and Implications for Policy

It is important to recognize that the path the economy takes toward the Fed’s mandated goals may continue to be bumpy and uneven, and we should not overreact to individual data points. To President Collins' thinking, that reflects the realities of a unique and challenging pandemic and the economic recovery from it. Expecting all indicators to be well aligned is too high a bar, but seeing sustained, broadening signs of progress should provide the necessary confidence she would need to begin a methodical adjustment to our policy stance.

Inflation Expectations and Price Setting Among Fifth District Firms

Evidence from a Federal Reserve Fifth District survey indicates that businesses become more reactive to inflation as it rises, but much of that reactivity reverses as inflation ebbs. Remarks for the Panel Discussion “Why Did We Miscast Inflation?”

Inflation remains too high, and recent data – including several strong labor market indicators, as well as faster than expected retail sales and producer price inflation – all reinforce my view that we have more work to do, to bring inflation down to the 2 percent target. While optimistic there is a path to restoring price stability without a significant downturn, I am also well aware of the many risks and uncertainties, including the risk of a self-fulfilling loss of business and consumer confidence.
