Consumer Use of Multiple Payment Methods
The paper investigates the degree to which buyers choose to diversify their use of payment methods for in-person purchases. Some buyers use only one payment instrument. Others combine the use of mostly cash, credit, debit cards, and a few paper checks and prepaid cards. To each survey respondent, I apply three concentration measures over the use of payment instruments. Results show that the degree of consumers' payment concentration exhibits almost no correlation with consumer demographics, payment volume, or aggregate value.

Consumer Payment Behavior by Income and Demographics
Despite the introduction of an array of innovations and new payment options for consumers over the last decade, income and demographics remain significant predictors of payment behavior. Using data from a 2023 consumer payments diary, we find that income, age, and education are significant predictors of which payment instruments consumers adopt and use. These associations hold not only for traditional payment instruments—cards and paper—but also for innovations such as mobile apps; buy now, pay later (BNPL); and cryptocurrency. How Merchants Get Paid
Using a representative sample of actual payments made by adult U.S. consumers, this article analyzes the composition of payment methods consumers use to pay for goods and services. Consumer spending is divided into 21 main merchant categories. Results show the distributions of electronic, card, and paper payment methods and the degree of payment concentration for each merchant category.
