The continuing evolution of American poverty and its implications for community development


Abstract: Berube summarizes the literature on: 1) the changing nature of poverty (e.g., spatial distribution), 2) changes in demographics (e.g., age of the population, immigration, family structure), and 3) the new realities in the economy (e.g., income inequality loss of low skilled jobs, increasing volatility in income and status, current and projected high level of unemployment, tighter underwriting standards/constriction of capital, and the enormous damage caused to families and communities by the foreclosure crisis).
