The SPARCC Initiative: Fostering Racial Equity, Health, and Climate Resilience in the Built Environment
Abstract: This article explains why we, as funders, came to the table to develop and support the Strong, Prosperous, and Resilient Communities Challenge (SPARCC), why we remain there, and what we expect our collective power to achieve. Together, we aim to reverse a series of policy and programmatic decisions that have resulted in decades of disinvestment in low-income communities across the nation, fueling enormous disparities in health and economic opportunities across zip codes that are often just a few miles apart. We expect that by building partnerships, emphasizing local engagement, and fostering leadership that brings disadvantaged populations into development decisions, SPARCC will help give all residents the opportunity to thrive.
