Planning for Driving Retirement: Context and Considerations
Abstract: As the baby boomer generation ages, more and more Americans will face ?driving retirement,? when they can no longer affordably or safely drive automobiles and must find alternate transportation options. Given the growing number of lower-income and Social Security-dependent seniors who struggle with housing and transportation costs, it is essential that the U.S. begins to plan for more affordable, accessible, and adaptable forms of transportation to ensure older Americans are able to continue to enjoy full and active lives in their communities as they give up their personal cars. This article considers the types of transportation needed to accommodate these older Americans, and the planning both in the community and with seniors themselves needed to launch and maintain these alternative transportation options.
