The Impact of Fintech Lending on Credit Access for U.S. Small Businesses

Small business lending (SBL) plays an important role in funding productive investment and fostering local economic growth. Recently, nonbank lenders have gained market share in the SBL market in the United States, especially relative to community banks. Among nonbanks, fintech lenders have become particularly active, leveraging alternative data for their own internal credit scoring. “Give Me Some Credit!”: Using Alternative Data to Expand Credit Access

Fintechs, credit bureaus, and financial institutions are collecting alternative data to develop new scoring models that supplement traditional credit reports. Studies, providers, and pilot programs suggest that these alternative data can improve credit reporting and thereby expand access to fair credit. However, use of alternative data is still low due to both uncertainty about the benefits relative to the cost and consumer concerns about use and privacy.
