Real output of bank services: what counts is what banks do, not what they own

The measurement of bank output, a difficult and contentious issue, has become even more important in the aftermath of the devastating financial crisis of recent years. In this paper, we argue that models of banks as processors of information and transactions imply a quantity measure of bank service output based on transaction counts instead of balances of loans and deposits. Compiling new and comparable output measures for the United States and a range of European countries, we show that our counts-based output series exhibit significantly different growth patterns from those of our ...

Improving business payments by asking what corporations really want

A recent study led by the New York Fed sheds light on the changes in the payment process that large corporations would most like to see. The study's results, summarized in this article, suggest that corporate treasurers and cash managers would particularly value enhancements that decrease unauthorized and insufficiently funded payments, streamline data formats, improve bank services and information posting, and reduce cross-border payment uncertainties.

Service output of bank holding companies in the 1990s and the role of risk

This paper constructs a new measure of output for Bank Holding Companies (BHCs) over the period 1986 to 1999. The changing structure of banking : a look at traditional and new ways of delivering banking services

In the short span of just ten to fifteen years, Tenth District banking has made the dramatic leap from predominantly a unit banking or single office framework to one that encompasses both statewide branching and interstate banking. This article examines the major factors behind these changes and then looks at the District's evolving banking structure. Overall, the total number of banks operating in Tenth District states has declined by about 40 percent since 1985. This decline, though, has been accompanied by a significant increase in the number of bank branches and facilities. ; Other ...

Banks' payments-driven revenues

Although many people believe that the payments area is a fairly minor business function within the banking sector, an increasing share of banks' revenue comes from fee services. To understand the full scope of the payments area, the author develops a broad definition of this business line and builds an estimate of payments-related earnings using recent data disclosed in bank holding company annual reports. Countering the view that payments contribute little to net revenue, the author finds that the payments area is one of the core activities of commercial banks. According to his estimates, ...
